Technical Harvest Report and Viticultural Analysis

Climatic Context: Historic

The year 2021 was characterised by one of the most prolonged and intense heatwaves in recent decades. Temperatures remained at extreme levels throughout July and August, resulting in severe thermal and water stress, compounded by significant wildfire activity across forested areas of the island.

Viticultural Response: Survival Strategies and Yield Management

A young vine shoot in the Philia vineyards during the 2021 season, representing the drastic yield reduction strategy to ensure phenolic maturity and plant vitality.

Interventions were precisely targeted to maintain the physiological balance of the vine:

  • Drastic Yield Reduction: A rigorous yield reduction was implemented, reducing production below 500 kg per stremma (≈5,000 kg/ha). This approach allowed the vines to allocate limited water and nutrient reserves to a reduced number of clusters, supporting phenolic maturity while preserving plant vitality.

  • Zeolite Application: Zeolite spraying acted as a reflective mineral layer, reducing solar radiation load on the canopy and mitigating heat stress within the cluster zone, thereby supporting the continuation of physiological activity under extreme conditions.

  • No-till Soil Management & Shading: Soil was left undisturbed to preserve structure and moisture within the schistose subsoil, while a dense canopy architecture provided effective cluster shading and reduced direct solar exposure.

Phytosanitary Conditions: Drought-Induced Stability

From a disease management perspective, 2021 was among the cleanest vintages on record:

  • Downy Mildew: No incidence observed due to extreme drought conditions.

  • Powdery Mildew: Development remained limited under sustained high temperatures and low humidity.

  • Physiological Stress: The primary challenge was managing potential ripening slowdown or imbalance under extreme heat pressure.

Harvest: Preserving Acidity

The harvest was conducted rapidly to limit berry dehydration. Selection was based on sensory evaluation alongside analytical parameters, prioritising the preservation of freshness and structural balance.

The altitude of 950 metres played a critical role in moderating ripening kinetics. Diurnal temperature variation supported the retention of acidity and aromatic precision despite severe climatic stress.

The 2021 Profile

The 2021 wines are shaped by intense solar exposure and extreme climatic pressure. They display notable structural density and a complex aromatic profile, framed by the characteristic saline backbone of the Samos terroir.

The significant yield reduction contributed directly to concentration and depth, resulting in a vintage defined by tension, density, and controlled power.
